Virtual presentation of the new volume 1990
Yesterday, right on time after the expiration of the 30-year protection period, the Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland presented its new volume on the year 1990 with the participation of former Federal Councillor Arnold Koller. The President of the Swiss Confederation in 1990 recalled his first presidential year and he emphasized the edition as a «valuable working tool» for research in contemporary history.

150 Jahre Vorort
Vor 150 Jahren, am 12. März 1870, wurde mit dem Schweizerischen Handels- und Industrieverein (kurz Vorort, heute economiesuisse) einer der bedeutendsten Wirtschaftsverbände des Landes gegründet. Auf Dodis finden sich rund 1000 Dokumente, die vom Vorort verfasst wurden, an den Vorort gerichtet waren oder in denen der Lobbyverband der Privatwirtschaft erwähnt wird.

In the presence of Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Sacha Zala presented this Monday at the University of Geneva the latest publication in the series Quaderni di Dodis, «Switzerland and the Construction of Multilateralism».
80 years since the outbreak of World War II
«In the past few days, the foreign policy situation has escalated to the point that it seems a matter of urgent necessity to entrust the security of our boarders and the protection of our neutrality to the army». This statement was pronounced during the Federal Council's 1st September 1939 morning session, as part of its decision on mobilisation.
When the Wall Came Down
Helmut Kohl was very impressed when he returned to the Federal Chancellery in Bonn from Berlin on the morning of 10 November 1989. «It has the atmosphere of a festival», he described to U. S. President George Bush on the phone the atmosphere of the memorable night when the Wall came down. «The frontiers are absolutely open. At certain points they are literally taking down the Wall.»

Aus EPD wird EDA
Vor 40 Jahren wurde das «Eidgenössische Politische Departement» offiziell in «Eidgenössisches Departement für auswärtige Angelegenheiten» umbenannt. Aus dem EPD wurde das EDA (dodis.ch/49609). Die Umbenennung war Bestandteil der in den 1960er Jahren eingeleiteten und im Januar 1979 abgeschlossenen Totalrevision der Bundesverwaltung.
Diplomatische Dokumente und multiperspektivische Forschung
Vor vierzig Jahren besuchte der israelische Aussenminister Moshe Dayan die Schweiz. Er weilte vom 6. bis 8. Dezember 1978 mit einer hochrangigen Delegation in Bern und tauschte sich mit seinem Amtskollegen Pierre Aubert sowie leitenden Mitarbeitern des Eidg. Politischen Departements (EPD) und des Volkswirtschaftsdepartements (EVD) aus.
New Yorker Studentenprotest gegen «Schweizer Imperialismus»
Am 26. Oktober 1968 marschierte die studentische Jugend vor dem schweizerischen Generalkonsulat in New York auf. In dem Flugblatt, das die Aktivisten der Gruppe «Studenten für die Rechte Liechtensteins» verteilten, riefen sie unverblümt zum Boykott von Schweizer Käse und Schokolade auf. «Wir müssen die Schweizer JETZT stoppen, bevor sie auch uns angreifen.»
Hoher Besuch auf der Forschungsstelle
Am 11. Oktober 2018 erhielt die Forschungsstelle Dodis hohen Besuch aus dem Bundeshaus. Bundesrat Ignazio Cassis, begleitet vom EDA-Generalsekretär sowie dem persönlichen Mitarbeiterstab des Departementschefs, stattete dem unabhängigen Kompetenzzentrum für die Geschichte der schweizerischen Aussenpolitik einen Freundschaftsbesuch ab.
«Journal d'un témoin»
Ministre de Suisse à Tokyo de 1940 à 1945, Camille Gorgé fait figure de témoin privilégié de cette période tragique de l’histoire mondiale. Ses Mémoires inédits, intitulés «Débâcle au Soleil-Levant: Journal d’un témoin», ont été rédigés dans l’immédiat après-guerre à partir de ses souvenirs, notes personnelles, rapports officiels et correspondances.
«Die Revolte der Jungen»
«1968» fand nicht nur in Paris und Prag, sondern auch in Leuven, Lund und Londonderry, in Goiana, al-Mansura und Rawalpindi statt. Die Schweizer Diplomaten auf den Aussenposten in aller Welt nahmen die Proteste von Jugendlichen, die sich damals in verschiedenen Ländern ereigneten, als eine globale Bewegung wahr.
Swiss Foreign Policy, 1973–1975: New Volume Out Now!
«This kind of foreign ministry, with no police protection, but with a peaceful vegetable market ante portas, is what Palestinians dream of», a functionary of the Fatah party remarked on leaving the federal parliament building in Bern in June 1973. He was visiting the Federal Political Department to establish a representation of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation in Geneva.
Call for Papers for the Conference «Global Diplomacy»
From August 30th–31th, 2018 in Basel and Bern, the international Conference «Global Diplomacy – A Post-Institutional Approach» will be taken place. It is organized in the course of the SNSF-project «A Global History of Swiss Diplomacy», a cooperation between the the research center Dodis and the Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel.

Die Gorgé-Tagebücher: Editionsprojekt mit der Fernuni
«Debakel der Aufgehenden Sonne», so nannte Camille Gorgé seine Tagebuchaufzeichnungen vom Januar 1940 bis Oktober 1945. Als schweizerischer Gesandter in Tokio erlebte der aus dem Berner Jura stammende Diplomat hautnah den Untergang des japanischen Kaiserreichs im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Sein Aufzeichnungen sind ein eindrückliches Selbstzeugnis.
«Wahlverwandtschaft zweier Sonderfälle im Kalten Krieg»
Band 8 der Reihe «Quaderni di Dodis» handelt von den Beziehungen der Schweiz zum sozialistischen Jugoslawien. Die Bedeutung derselben lässt sich bereits daran ersehen, dass Menschen, die ihre familiären Wurzeln im ehemaligen Vielvölkerstaat auf dem Balkan haben, heute fast fünf Prozent der schweizerischen Bevölkerung ausmachen.

That is how the world looked like 20 years ago, when the page www.dodis.ch went online on 28 May 1997.

On 17 January 2017, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter presented a book to the outgoing US-Secretary of State John Kerry as a farewell gift. This publication «‹If Neutral Switzerland Did not Exist, We Would Have Had to Invent It›. A Brief Selection of Documents on the Relations Between Switzerland, the United States and Cuba 1961–1971» is a special edition of Dodis-documents.
«Harmony Must Dominate the World»
Im Fokus des sechsten Bandes der Reihe «Quaderni di Dodis» stehen die Aktivitäten internationaler Organisationen im weiten Feld der Musik in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. «Harmony must dominate the world». Mit diesem Motto rief der australische Friedensaktivist Alfred E. Evershed Mitte der 1930er Jahre alle musikalischen Menschen dazu auf, sich einer globalen Harmoniekampagne anzuschliessen und auf diese Weise einen Beitrag zum Frieden in der Welt zu leisten. Bis heute wird der Musik wie kaum einem anderen Kulturgut die Fähigkeit zugesprochen, Grenzen aller Art zu überwinden.
Politische Reden von Ausländern
Ein Ende September 2016 eingereichter parlamentarischer Vorstoss möchte die Bewilligungspflicht für ausländische Redner wiedereinführen, wie sie zwischen 1948 und 1998 in Kraft war. Der damalige Bundesratsbeschluss sah vor, dass «Ausländer [...] an Versammlungen nur mit besonderer Bewilligung über ein politisches Thema reden [dürfen]».
The DDS' Analysis on the «Years of Terror»
The Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland (DDS) have analysed the question of Palestinian terrorism against targets in Switzerland in 1969/70 and its consequences as part of their regular research during the last few years. Consequently, numerous documents have been published in the database Dodis since 2012 (cf. A Guide to the «Years of Terror»).

For some weeks now, there have been speculations in the media regarding Palestinian terror in Switzerland in 1970. The diplomatic documents on Dodis can contribute to rendering this debate more objective. In order to facilitate access to their resources for a broader audience, the DDS have adjusted their research tools specifically with regard to this issue.

«SOS Biafra» – New volume in the series «Quaderni di Dodis»
The newly published fifth volume of the series «Quaderni di Dodis» centres on Switzerland's foreign relations in the context of the Nigerian civil war, 1967–1970. «SOS Biafra» was the International Committee of the Red Cross's appeal to the public, in May 1968, to support the relief mission in the secessionist area, which was completely isolated.

Dodis is returning to its past so as to make its way into the future. The complete first series of the Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland's (DDS) print publication, covering a period from the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1848 up to the end of World War II in 1945, has been incorporated in Dodis, indexed, and given searchable keywords.

Als Professorin für Schweizer Geschichte an der Universität Bern und Präsidentin der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Geschichte hat sie die Entwicklung der historischen Wissenschaften in der Schweiz massgeblich geprägt.
The Catastrophe of Mattmark in 1965
50 years ago, on August 30 1965, a glacial slide of the Allalin-glacier near Mattmark in the Valais buried and killed 88 mostly Italian construction workers under 500 000 m3 of ice. While the migration treaty of 1964 had helped to ease relations between Italy and Switzerland, the catastrophe of Mattmark led to their renewed deterioration. Cf. dodis.ch/G9174.
40 years of DDS – 20 years of Dodis
2015 truly is the «ultimate year of jubilees»: In April, the research group of the Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland celebrated the 20th anniversary of the data base Dodis and, on June 7, the research project of the Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland turned 40!
Happy Birthday: Dodis turns 20!
Today, everyday life without the Internet is hardly conceivable. In 1995, however, not even half a percent of the world’s population was using the World Wide Web. Twenty years ago, on March 11, 1995, when the world was constituted in such a manner, the first document was integrated in the Dodis database. Thus, Dodis celebrates its 20th birthday today.

Do you think, that the Great Powers will fight each other because of this local question?» This was the reply the Undersecretary of State of the German Foreign ministry, Arthur Zimmermann, gave the Swiss envoy Alfred de Claparède on July 20, 1914 to the question of an eventual outbreak of the war.

The decisive step towards «Dodis 2.0» has been taken: in its continual efforts to renew the database, the research group of the DDS has brought together its front and back end technologies. Whereas so far, users only perceived small changes, «Dodis Reloaded» represents a definite milestone for the work of the research group.
Digital Humanities Summer School
The Digital Humanities Summer School in Switzerland took place for the first time in Berne from June 26th until June 29th. Over the course of these three days, over 100 delegates from more than 20 countries convened in order to discuss the newest trends in Digital Humanities, participate in numerous lectures and workshops, a “project slam,” and an “unconference.”

Dodis 1.6 features a simplified 'search mask' as well as clearer and more precise entries to the database. In an effort to refine the look of Dodis, an icon for persons, organizations and geographical terms has been added: where already possible, a photo illustrates the names of figures of Swiss diplomacy

Hommage au Professeur Jean-Claude Favez
Le groupe de recherche des DDS rend un hommage reconnaissant au Professeur Jean-Claude Favez qui vient de décéder après une longue maladie. Professeur à l’Université de Genève de 1969 à 2000, Jean-Claude Favez est l’auteur de nombreuses publications, notamment sur l’histoire de la politique extérieure suisse, sur le CICR et d’autres aspects essentiels de l’histoire contemporaine.
International Conference and Website
Switzerland will host the 2013 International Conference of Editors of Diplomatic Documents, which will take place in Geneva from 1st to 4th October 2013. The network was founded 25 years ago and every two years since then has organised an international meeting. These conferences have previously taken place in locations such as London, Washington, Canberra and Jerusalem.

Swiss Foreign Policy, 1967–1969: New Volume Out Now!
For the most part, Felix Schnyder was happy with his work in Washington. «In an otherwise excellent relationship between Switzerland and the U.S., the only problem to cause unfriendly and critical remarks is the business of Swiss banks under the banner of our bank secrecy», the Swiss ambassador reported to Berne in December 1967.

In den repräsentativen Räumlichkeiten seiner Residenz in Moskau unterhielt sich der schweizerische Botschafter, August R. Lindt, im Dezember 1966 mit seinem nordkoreanischen Amtskollegen. «Ich empfing heute Botschafter Kim Ben Dik», schrieb Lindt nach Bern: «Er betrachtete sinnend das Glas Kirsch, das ich ihm kredenzt hatte, und sagte: ‹Dieses Getränk ist eben so rein und kristallklar wie die schweizerische Politik›» (Dok. 184, dodis.ch/31369).

Dodis provides «quick responses»
The QR-Code («Quick Response») is globally on the rise. In Switzerland, the square, two-dimensional matrix consisting of black and white dots has become an increasingly frequent sight in logistics, the media and advertisments. Joining this trend, the Dodis-documents are now tagged with QR-Codes.
The cameras of mobile phones or computers can read and identify these codes on the documents and thereby provide direct acces to the corresponding online record on Dodis. The record holds all relevant information on the respective document: Source and analysis are thus directly linked!

We are constantly working on adjustments and innovations which facilitate the use of our resources. If you are using the browser Firefox, you can now install the Dodis-Plug-in. Go to our database and choose "Dodis Document Search" in the Firefox search field at the top right corner of the window. Now you can easily search Dodis through your browser window.

Mit der Fussball-WM in Südafrika richten sich in diesen Tagen alle Augen der Welt auf Afrika. So auch vor 50 Jahren, als 1960 als das Jahr Afrikas in die Geschichte einging. 17 afrikanische Länder erlangten damals die Unabhängigkeit.

The database Dodis now offers direct access to its content. Each entity in Dodis (documents, persons, organizations or geographic names) has a permalink (What is this?) allowing direct access to the information needed – with just one click, avoiding the ‘search-mask’. Thus, users have an efficient and quick instrument at their disposal, which also simplifies quoting sources from dodis.ch in their researches.
60 Jahre Schweiz-China
Vor 60 Jahren, am 17. Januar 1950, anerkannte die Schweiz als einer der ersten westlichen Staaten die Volksrepublik China.

Jean-François Bergier dies
On Thursday, October 29 2009, Jean-Fraçois Bergier has died at the age of 77. The historian, who specialized in economic and social history, was particularly known in connection with the independent commission of experts Switzerland – Second World War (ICE) which he chaired from 1996 until 2001. The professor in history at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich had been a member of the commission for the publication of the Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland (DDS) from 1979 until 1999.

The first series of DDS (1848-1945) is online!
The volumes 1-15 of DDS are accessible on the website of the official publications (run by the Swiss Federal Archives). They cover documents from 1848 to 1945. This corresponds to approximately 7000 documents on approximately 18'000 sides.
